U.S. Army: A Force Adrift:

Communists Must Steer Soldiers to Revolution

BIGGER    SMALLER

FROM A U.S. MILITARY BASE--When only 27% of troops feel that senior military leaders have their best interest at heart, it shows the potential that the majority of troops can be won to turn the guns around.
A recent Military Times article called “America’s Military: A Force Adrift” spent an enormous amount of energy and resources conducting a survey of troops to expose the obvious: Army morale is at an all time low (since the Vietnam War) with a lot of soldiers feeling burned out and hating their quality of life.
With Congress’ policy of sequestration to cut spending of $1.2 trillion across federal agencies, including $500 billion from the military over the next decade, the rank-and-file are experiencing the reality of a capitalist system that will send them off to die and kill in imperialist wars only to return to a rotten system that cannot provide for their basic needs.
The reality is apparent in the armed forces’ health care and pay. Only 45% of troops rated their military health care as good or excellent compared to 78% in 2009. Perhaps many of the troops have experienced waiting months to receive a consultation with a specialist, not including treatment. As far as pay, only 44% are satisfied with their pay compared to 87% in 2009. These statistics are more distressing when you consider the sacrifice made by war-weary soldiers returning from multiple deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan.

A comrade inside the military reports that he is witnessing this low morale first hand. “There are a lot of sergeants in my unit that have served in Iraq and Afghanistan,” says the comrade, “and these soldiers are the ones that are done with the Army. They are unhappy and they won’t reenlist.”
There is something else that soldiers are weary about: Soldiers, sailors and marines understand the lies and false promises of this capitalist system. They can see that this system is rotten. They can be won to see that this system needs to be replaced with a communist system that values all workers’ lives. They can see that the only war we need is a war to put an end to capitalism for good.
Before, during and after a communist revolution, workers and troops will organize a Red Army to fight alongside one another with the goal of serving the interests of the workers around the world. A 100% effort will be made to attend to the well-being of everyone without imperialist profits, which will be abolished.
“[Rank-and-file troops] can’t see what readiness might be in five, 10, 15 years from now when the equipment they are using today may no longer be serviceable,” says Todd Harrison, military expert with the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments in Washington,  in the Military Times article.

When capitalists criticize their own military system, we should be on alert. It is certain they are searching for a plan to maintain unconditional power over the troops and to prepare for the next and future wars, including world war. A communist analysis and perspective is useful in this matter to show that the interest of the soldiers, sailors, marines and workers are the opposite of the interests of the brass and the capitalist, imperialist bosses.
