El Salvador: Another Front in US-China Conflict

Biden, Xi, Bukele: Deadly for Workers: Communist Revolution will put an End to Capitalism, Imperialism

EL SALVADOR — “China should help the country, so that it stops being an American colony. It would make many of us happy,” said a worker.

“So, you believe that China is communist? NO, the only thing that will happen is that we are going to change empires, ” responded a co-worker.

The fmln government opened relations with China in 2018. A joint declaration signed at the end of 2019 confirmed El Salvador’s participation in the New Silk Road. El Salvador affirmed the One China principle and categorically rejected anything contrary to it, including any form of “independence” for Taiwan.

The Silk Road imperialist project brings profits for Chinese businessmen and exploitation for the working class. A worker comrade in ICWP said, “A boss is a boss, and the only thing they want from us is to suck our sweat and blood every day in the factories.”

After meeting Chinese president Xi Jinping, El Salvador’s president Nayib Bukele said the investment represented “gigantic and non-reimbursable cooperation.” He did not announce the expected amount of investment. Bukele’s government won the elections with the campaign of “no to corruption” but they have already started to pull out their money-hungry claws.

China is investing in building a soccer stadium, a national library, and a plant to extract drinkable water from Lake Ilopango on the outskirts of the Salvadoran capital.

China tried to create a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in the country but the project that is temporarily paralyzed by the National Association of Private Enterprise (ANEP) a right-wing pro-USA business organization.

US Warns “Salvadorans Should Be Careful” About Doing Business with China

The Chargé d’Affaires of the US embassy in El Salvador announced that his country is the “reliable partner” and will always support El Salvador.

“On other issues, such as working on the economy or loans to El Salvador, my opinion would be that Salvadorans should be careful,” he said, “because as we have seen in the region, there are practices without transparency, sometimes with corruption, with loans and there are many countries that have got into debt with loans from China.”

El Salvador is negotiating with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for at least $1.3 billion financing to face the emergency caused by the pandemic. The country’s public debt is around 92% of its Gross Domestic Product.

US senators urged the Biden government to “commit to coordinating with the IMF and other international financial institutions to make clear that US financial support for the Bukele government must depend on respect for democracy. judicial independence and the rule of law.”

Comrades of ICWP in the USA and elsewhere know that the US government does not care about workers in countries like El Salvador or anywhere. This is part of its geopolitical strategy to defeat its Chinese enemy. We must show our co-workers what is happening here.

US Imperialism versus Chinese Imperialism

Some former fmln commanders are in Venezuela dealing with China to replace US imperialism, which is extorting them through the International Monetary Fund. They want China to buy El Salvador’s foreign debt.

Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua and now El Salvador have already signed plans with China to help them get out of their economic debts to US financiers.

Nayib Bukele is an astute businessman. He warned you cannot just look to the north. He is getting close to China. But El Salvador has three million citizens residing in the United States and the Salvadoran economy survives from their monthly remittances.

Thunder from the Envoy of the US Empire

Ricardo Zúñiga, special envoy of the US State Department, traveled to El Salvador from May 10th to May 12th. In an interview on May 12, he stated, “I met yesterday with President Bukele. We were able to tell him that we do not agree with the decision made by the Legislative Assembly to remove 5 magistrates from the Supreme Court of Justice. and the Attorney General on May 1st. We think that the right thing to do is to return to [the way things were] April 30,”

He continued, “I am going to inform Congress, the White House and the State Department what is happening here, since we are partner countries and friends.”

“El Salvador must remember that 3 million of its compatriots work in the US and we are trying to help.” Referring to El Salvador’s rapprochement with China, he said, “We are concerned about what is happening here.”

Bukele answered Zúñiga’s statement in a tweet: “For the voices that still ask us to return to the past: with much respect and affection: the changes we are making are IRREVERSIBLE. We will not go back to the past; we will go to the future ” referring to his alliance with China and challenging the US government.

The Salvadoran government warns that if the United States demands transparency and democracy, it will go with the Chinese. Bukele has aroused anti-American sentiment among his former fmln advisers, who do not hesitate to support Chinese over American capital.

Comrades of the International Communist Workers’ Party, let’s not fall into the capitalists’ war games, be they US or Chinese! Our slogan must be to defeat capitalism, wherever it comes from.
