Building a Mass Communist Party in South Africa

GQEBERHA (South Africa), August 2— The International Communist Workers’ Party has persistently and consistently struggled with comrades here for over ten years. This development has not been linear nor smooth. But it has resulted in hundreds reading the Red Flag. Tens have joined and taken leadership in the party. Our greatest weapons are the Red Flag and our unity, commitment, and struggle to overcome our weaknesses and resolve contradictions.
Most of us joined the party full of nationalism and other capitalist ideologies and ideas, such as opportunism and selfishness. We have made great strides in overcoming these shortcomings. We have embraced the communist political line of fighting directly for communism. These tendencies never fully go away while we live in a capitalist society full of racism, nationalism, and exploitation. But our struggle is to mobilize the masses, colleagues, soldiers, family and friends, and our neighbours.
Our struggle is also to build communist leadership that constantly and sharply struggles against these capitalist tendencies. To overcome our weaknesses, resolve our contradictions and to struggle in a respectful and comradely way.
Most of our comrades are young. Some work in various factories, in the auto industry as well as the textile industry. Some are in school. Others are not working.
They all joined because they seek an alternative to this brutal capitalist system. Most joined because they believe in the vision of a communist future. They want to actively participate in bringing that communist revolutionary change.
Over the last two years, particularly at the onset of the Gaza genocide at the hands of the Israeli and US imperialists, comrades have increased their efforts to mobilise and recruit friends and the working-class to join our party. We do, however, know that the Gaza genocide is on the imperialist agenda as we speak.
Many of the comrades did not pay much attention before 7 October 2023 to what was happening in Gaza and around the world. They were more interested in finding what they will have as the next meal.
However, the persistent struggle about Gaza and the pamphlets produced by the party on Gaza, have rejuvenated comrades’ enthusiasm to fight for a better world—a communist society. This resulted in us organizing a march and a toyi-toyi in solidarity with our class brothers and sisters in Palestine, including Gaza. And all our class family suffering the horrors of capitalism around the world.
Comrades see that the working class does not have a saviour that will save them from this horror. Their saviour is communism when they organise themselves under one International Communist Workers’ Party.
This has resulted in the party being able to recruit more than ten committed female communist leaders to our collective, which was entirely male dominated in the past. Now there are more women than men in our collective in South Africa.
This growth has provided us with plenty of opportunities. As well, it has brought out about internal contradictions as we grow. These contradictions are both collective as well as individual contradictions on the part of comrades. We are building a stronger collective which is committed to the struggle to consolidate and strengthen the party to fight for the communist future that we need so urgently.
Red Salute!
