El Salvador: Mobilizing the Working Class for a Communist World
EL SALVADOR, May 1 — “I believe communism is possible. That’s why we’re here,” said a worker while reading our banner at the march. He enthusiastically took our newspaper, Red Flag.
“Do you want a newspaper? It talks about communism. We are an internationalist communist party,” a comrade told a university worker. “Sure, give me one. I’m at the march as part of the people.”
Another worker, listening to the conversation, noted, “I’ve been reading Red Flag on your website for several years.” We exchanged contact information with both of them.
That’s how the great day of working-class mobilization began: in a mass march. We commemorated the historic struggle of the working class, to fight for a communist revolution, which we continue today. We arrived early with flags, posters, banners, newspapers, and T-shirts.
Our contingent included dozens of workers from four factories, rural workers, students, and healthcare workers, who brought a first-aid kit in case of any health problems. Comrades who had not been very active also came, showing that they are back with ICWP to continue the struggle.
Comrades from the interior of the country got up early, evading police checkpoints that the government set up to try to keep the working class from marching. Other comrades traveled a day early in order to avoid problems and arrive on time.
The workers took to the streets, facing repression under the state of exception that harasses and imprisons those who oppose its horrible policies.
The government is in the midst of scandalous revelations of corruption. They continue to throw small farmers off their lands and hand them over to wealthy members of their corrupt group. Thousands of workers have been laid off, their families left in a precarious situation. To cover up the wave of criticism and bad publicity, the government is offering a pay increase that doesn’t keep up with the increase in the cost of living.
Mobilizing the working class for communism means fighting against growing fascism, the horror of the genocide in Gaza, and all imperialist wars perpetrated by the murderous capitalists. To achieve this, we need a massive ICWP to fight for a communist society without wage slavery, money and all forms of exploitation.
“Give me several newspapers, I want to share them with other friends,” said a worker. During the march, we distributed 1,200 copies of Red Flag and encouraged people to read them. Marchers asked us for more.
“We need to bring more papers. Workers need to be informed about communist ideas,” said a comrade.
“Workers’ struggles have no borders. Long live Communism!” The slogans shouted by workers were loud and enthusiastic.
“Communism is coming and no one will stop it!” “Fight, win! Workers to power!” were slogans heard throughout the march.
Workers’ Struggles for Communism Have No Borders
“Our struggle is for no immigrant to be called illegal,” read a sign. Our working-class siblings in the U.S. are being attacked with jail and deportation. We answer all of this by organizing harder to achieve a communist system that will end borders, racism, xenophobia, sexism, and all types of discrimination.
“I feel very happy. The ICWP mobilization was successful. More workers from the factory joined in,” said a comrade who works in a factory.
Working-class mobilization is a collective expression, a way to promote communist ideas and make new contacts.
Every Mobilization is a School, From Its Organization to May Day
The comrades in the factory, inviting their fellow workers, explained why it was important to march and distribute Red Flag. They explained the need to spread communist ideas. Red Flag must reach every factory.
At the end of ICWP’s participation in the march, we shared food and conversations with our comrades, increasing our enthusiasm to continue the struggle. This is extremely important because it allows us to consolidate communist social relations.
A comrade from the countryside said, “I want to share with you some bread that my family and I made by hand, so you can enjoy it in the name of the communist struggle.”
We are one class, the working class, fighting to victory through communist revolution.
