Nationwide strike rocks Panama
June 24— A two-month long nationwide strike continues to roll through Panama. This, despite increasing repression. Thousands of workers who cultivate Chiquita bananas. Construction workers and school workers. They and many others walked out and marched. They have defied a “state of emergency” and mass retaliatory layoffs.
Strikers oppose privatization of pensions. They denounce ecologically dangerous mining projects. And Panamanian politicians’ capitulation to US imperialism.
Strikers have received mass support. From students and doctors. Indigenous groups and feminist collectives. And more.
Two other mass strikes in recent years were diverted into anti-corruption campaigns and negotiations. Capitalism itself is a corrupt system! Exploitation can’t be negotiated away!
