October 14—Mass protests against Indonesia’s new labor law enter a second week. A million workers have joined strikes and militant demonstrations in sixty cities and industrial zones across Indonesia’s 3000-mile archipelago. The “omnibus” law attacks workers and weakens environmental protections. It aims to spur investment by intensifying exploitation in southeast Asia’s largest economy. Indonesia has the world’s fourth-largest population and largest Muslim population. Muslim organizations are joining trade unions in legal challenges to the anti-worker law. But workers need a communist outlook, not trade-union or religious ideology. Only revolutionary communism can lead workers to destroy the capitalist system at the root of the masses’ misery. Indonesia once had millions of communists. Today’s rebels must now join and build the International Communist Workers’ Party.
